GET TO KNOW : Linux Boot Process
Video yang akan dibahas dalam ulasan ini bersumber dari kanal YouTube HandsonERP. Video ini membahas proses booting pada Linux oleh Hasan Mir. Dengan durasi sepanjang 5 menit 14 detik, video yang diunggah pada 25 Juni 2013 ini telah dilihat oleh 75.314 orang. Video dapat diakses melalui pranala http://youtu.be/ZtVpz5VWjAs.
Video ini menjelaskan enam tahap proses booting pada Linux yaitu BIOS, MBR, GRUB, Kernel, Init, dan Runlevel. BIOS melaksanakan pengecekan pada perangkat dan sistem komputer, me-load, dan menjalankan MBR boot loader. Setelah itu, GRUB me-load dan menjalankan GRUB boot loader yang dapat menjembatani pengguna untuk memilih kernel image (apabila terdapat lebih dari satu). GRUB boot loader nantinya akan me-load dan menjalankan kernel dan initrd images. Tahap terakhir dalam proses booting pada Linux adalah eksekusi runlevel program.
Penjelasan pada video ini tergolong singkat, tetapi cukup memberikan pemahaman terkait materi yang dibahas. Tampilan dan animasi yang diberikan video juga menarik dan bisa memperjelas perkataan penutur. Meski minim ilustrasi, video ini mampu membuat penontonnya tidak kehilangan fokus dikarenakan tipografi dan pembahasan materi yang lugas.

RAID IN A NUTSHELL : All About RAID
Video yang akan dibahas dalam ulasan ini bersumber dari kanal YouTube Iomega Corporation. Sesuai dengan judulnya, All About RAID, video tersebut menampilkan penjelasan terkait RAID oleh Bill Hansen. Dengan durasi sepanjang 3 menit 43 detik, video yang diunggah pada 29 Juli 2010 ini telah dilihat oleh 174.168 orang. Video dapat diakses melalui pranala http://youtu.be/PP0iQs8qBNU.
Setelah diawali oleh penjelasan RAID secara umum, video ini menjabarkan secara singkat istilah-istilah yang sangat berhubungan dengan sistem tersebut (striping, mirroring, dan fault tolerance). Teknik penyimpanan data yang identik ke dalam lebih dari satu disk disebut mirroring. Berbeda dengan mirroring, striping adalah memecah data ke beberapa disk. Fault tolerance saya simpulkan sebagai metode untuk mengembalikan data yang hilang dengan menggunakan parity.
Video ini juga memaparkan perbedaan antara RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 5, RAID 6, dan RAID 10. Dijelaskan pula keuntungan dan konsekuensi dari penggunaan setiap RAID, misalnya RAID 0 yang bekerja dengan cepat tetapi kurang direkomendasikan karena alasan keamanan. Untuk memaksimalkan kinerja RAID, kita juga bisa menggunakan kombinasi dari RAID yang sudah ada, misalnya RAID 10 yang menggunakan mirroring dan striping.
Sebagai Global Product Manager dari Iomega Corporation, Bill Hansen menyampaikan isi video dengan baik dan menggunakan bahasa yang mudah dimengerti. Ilustrasi yang digunakan sangat membantu saya dalam memahami penjelasan materi. Meski tergolong singkat, video ini mampu memberikan penjelasan yang padat dan menyeluruh terkait RAID secara garis besar.
